What is Thanksgiving Day?

In Great Britain Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in Churches across the land on a relevant Sunday to mark the end of the local harvest. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers and today in Canada and the USA this has become Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, an annual one-day holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. In Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

==Origins of American Thanksgiving
The first American Thanksgiving was a feast that took place on an unremembered date, sometime in the autumn of 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, Massachusetts. In 1620, a group led by separatists from the Church of England, who were heading for Virginia, instead landed at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. In the autumn of 1621, they celebrated a three-day Harvest festival with the native Wampanoag people, without whom they would not have survived the winter of 1620. This event was not viewed as a thanksgiving celebration at the time; the colony would not have a Thanksgiving observance until 1623 ? and that was a religious observance rather than a feast.
The nineteenth century reinterpretation of the 1621 festival has since become a model for the U.S. version of Thanksgiving, but it was an established tradition before the popularization of the Pilgrim mythology.

The tradition of thanking God for the year's harvest at autumn was already a well developed practice in Europe during medieval times. In some countries a part of this practice included lighting up bonfires, dancing and eating so as to be fit for the winter to come.
The first known thanksgiving feast or festival in North America was celebrated by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-speaking Native Americans) on 23 May 1541 in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, to celebrate his expedition's discovery of food supplies. In the sense of a feast in gratitude to God celebrated by Europeans in North America, this has a claim to be the true first North American Thanksgiving. The next was apparently celebrated a quarter of a century later on September 8, 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida. When Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed, he and his men shared a feast with the aboriginal peoples. Later, the aboriginal people called themselves "apple-tangerines" (which may or may not indicate those fruits were on the menu at that "Thanksgiving"). Another candidate for the first true Thanksgiving in territory now part of the United States is the feast that the party of Don Juan de Onate celebrated April 30, 1598 near the site of San Elizaio, Texas with the Manso Indians (Adams and Kendrick).
Thanksgiving is related to Harvest festivals that had long been a traditional holiday in much of Europe. The first known North American celebration of these traditional festivals by Europeans was held in Newfoundland by Martin Frobisher and the Frobisher Expedition to find the Northwest Passage in 1578, and Canadians trace their Thanksgiving to that festival.

感謝祭（かんしゃさい、Thanksgiving Day）：
感謝祭（かんしゃさい、Thanksgiving Day）は、アメリカ合衆国とカナダの祝日のひとつ。Thanksgivingと略称されたり、あるいは七面鳥の日（Turkey Day）と呼んだりもする。アメリカでは11月の第4木曜日、カナダでは10月の第2月曜日になっている。
感謝祭は、イギリスからマサチューセッツ州のプリマス植民地（Plymouth Plantation）に移住したピルグリムファーザーズの最初の収穫を記念する行事であると一般的に信じられている。ピルグリムがプリマスに到着した1620年の冬は大変厳しく、大勢の死者を出したが、近隣に居住していた北米先住民ワンパノーアグ族（Wampanoag）の助力により生き延びることができた。翌1621年の秋は、とりわけ収穫が多かったため、ピルグリムファーザーズはワンパノーアグ族を招待し、神の恵みに感謝して共にご馳走をいただいたことが始まりであるとされる。しかし、イギリス人の入植者もワンパノーアグ族も秋の収穫を祝う伝統を持っており、この年のこの出来事は特に感謝祭と位置づけられてはいなかった。プリマス植民地で最初に祝われた1623年の感謝祭は食事会というよりもむしろ教会で礼拝を行い、神に感謝を捧げる宗教的な意味合いが強かった。
アメリカ合衆国の感謝祭
現代の感謝祭では、宗教的な意味合いはかなり弱くなっており、現代アメリカ人の意識の中では、たくさんの親族が集まる大規模な食事会であり、大切な家族行事のひとつと位置づけられている。

感謝祭の朝には、大統領が二羽の七面鳥を屠殺される運命から恩赦する（Turkey Pardon）という行事がホワイトハウスで行われる。ニューヨーク市の百貨店メイシーズでは、1924年から毎年（第二次世界大戦のために1942年から1944年まで中断されたことを除き）巨大な風船を用いたパレード「Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade」が恒例行事となっている。
感謝祭の翌日の金曜日も休日となるため、感謝祭は4連休の祝日である。感謝祭が過ぎるとクリスマスまで約ひと月となり、クリスマスプレゼントのショッピングが激化するため、小売店のほとんどは客足をあてこんで金曜日から特別セールを行う。感謝祭からクリスマスまでのひと月は、小売店の年間の総売上の約半分を占めるという。
感謝祭の食事
伝統的な正餐のメインディッシュとはなるのは、角切りにしたパンを用いた詰め物（「スタッフィング（stuffing）」または「ドレッシング（dressing）」と呼ばれる）を詰めた大きな七面鳥の丸焼きである。そのため、感謝祭の日は「七面鳥の日」(Turkey Day)と口語的に呼ばれることもある。ベジタリアン向けには、七面鳥を模し豆腐や麩で作った食品（トーファーキーなど）も市販されている。切り分けた七面鳥にグレービーソースとクランベリーソースを添えて供する。
副菜には、マッシュポテトとグレービーソース、オレンジ色のサツマイモの料理、さやいんげんのキャセロールなどが一般的である。デザートには、アップルパイやパンプキンパイが供されることが多い。
感謝祭の伝統的な食事をいつ摂るかは、昼食、夕食、午後4時ごろなど、家庭によって異なる。また、ほとんど同じ献立をクリスマスの正餐に用いる家庭が多い。

横田基地ＮＣＯクラブでの演奏、アメリカ建国２００年祭には、同じく横田基地の輸送機の格納庫で演奏をし、基地司令官から日米友好の感謝状とトロフィーをいただきました。また、新宿ウィッシュボーンでの演奏、聖心女子大学・青山学院等の文化祭での演奏、昭和５０年３月１２日には日本テレビ１１PMに出演、日本で暮らす外国人向けのケーブルテレビ局のJCTVにも出演、スチューデントフェスティバルのゲストとして新宿厚生年金ホールでの演奏、ＶＡＮ９９ホールでの思い出、日比谷野外音楽堂etc.
★１９７５年には、メンバー全員でのアメリカ縦横断演奏旅行。
シアトル、サンフランシスコ、ＬＡ、ガーディナ、ラスベガス、グランドキャニオン、ハンツビル、ナッシュビル、ローズウェルのキングストンファーム、グランドオールオープリー、ニューヨーク、ボストン・・・。３１年前のことです。
★ラジオ関東の番組に毎週出演し、成城学園駅前にあったオープリーハウスでは番組で５週勝ち抜き、グランドチャンピオンに。
そのアンティリーズの・・・・・
★The Antilles Trio was founded in 1971 while the original members were attending St. Paul’s High School. They eventually all moved onto St. Paul’s University.
★Their main activities were not only the campus circuit but also many clubs, theaters, TV and radio shows around the Tokyo area including Yokota USAFB’s NCO club, 11PM show on Nippon Television, for foreign viewers only station JCTV , Radio Kanto, Shinjuku Koseinenkin Hall, Hibiya Yagaiongakudo, VAN99Hall, Wish Bone, Shinjuku, Oprey House, Seijo Gakuen, Sacred Heart’s (Seishin), Aoyama Gakuin, Atomi Gakuen, etc.
★In 1975, they toured US in 70 days, Vancouver, BC, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Grand Canyon, AZ, Oklahoma City, OK, Huntsville, AL, Nashville, TN, Roswell, GA (The Kingston Farm), Shawnee On Delaware, PA, New York, NY, and Boston, MA…. it was 31 years ago.
In 1976, they performed as a special guest musician in the gigantic hanger at Yokota USAFB for America’s Bicentennial Cerebration and received an award from the base commander.
★They participated in many contests and won them all, including first place at All Japan Amateur Band Contest with 35,000 contenders sponsored by Teijin VAN Corporation, and grand champion at All Japan Country and Folk Music Contest sponsored by Radio Kanto and Victor Corporation.
It all started 35 years ago.
